‘Taxi’ is just over five minutes long and successfully blends together a mix of country, art rock, and post-punk pop. It is dreamy and ethereal in its sound, to the point where it is almost euphoric.
It is a song fuelled by lo-fi soft guitar riffs and infectious yet sharp melodies. This reinforces the band’s 90s DIY-inspired roots, which has secured The Klittens a loyal fanbase and pushed them beyond the realms of the Dutch indie-underground scene. The track is structurally exciting too. The chorus is defined by an instrumental break, and its extended length provides lots of space for lyrical experimentation. Lines like“Taking faith from how they feel / I’m a leech who likes the thrill” assert The Klittens as a band who proudly embrace the weirdo-cool cultural aesthetic through their use of darkly thought-provoking lyrics whilst remaining chic in their sound and image.
‘Taxi’ is a real triumph for The Klittens. The whole song feels like a mash-up between Art School Girlfriend, Kate Bush, and 90s British DIY groups such as the Ocean Colour Scene. It is a track that is lyrically and melodically pristine in equal measure whilst genre-bending with ease, assurance and buoyancy.
The release of this new single and their upcoming debut album follows on from their EPs ‘Citrus’ (2022) and ‘Butter’ (2024). As well as previously touring the UK and Europe as a support act for the likes of SASAMI and Otoboke Beaver.
The second half of this year bodes to be a busy one for The Klittens as well, as they are set to tour the UK during October and November.
