Manchester five-piece, The Guest List have quickly cemented themselves as one of the UK’s most exciting up-and-coming indie bands with the release of their new single ‘If Ever Your Devil is Kind’.
Serving as the sixth single of their forthcoming debut album, ‘Something Real’, 'If Ever Your Devil Is Kind’, continues the band’s run of socially conscious tracks. Poignantly, it explores the feeling of dissatisfaction emotionally and romantically, and how this plays into feelings of inadequacy in fulfilling the role of a "real man".
‘If Ever Your Devil is Kind’ is certainly one of the band’s broodiest tracks to date, driven by a melancholic guitar melody that peaks and troughs throughout the track. This gives space, not only for the evocative string arrangement that accompanies the chorus, but also for the lyrics to land. Cai Alty sings “Somewhere between the house and the car and the birthdays // And the clean white picket fence and thе football net // You realised you still ain't happy yеt”. Alty admits the hollowness that appears despite fulfilling these conventional markers of masculinity and how happiness is not synonymous with these things. At only 20 years old, he is able to articulate this in a poignant way that will certainly resonate with other young men who feel this dissonance.
From what we’ve heard of the album so far, ‘Something Real’ explores a plethora of contemporary issues, such as the climate crisis in ‘Weatherman’ and the hypocrisy of online echo chambers in ‘Something Real’. The Manchester boys are able to explore thought-provoking themes whilst still maintaining and paying homage to their city’s sound, which is evidently striking a chord with both young and older listeners.
In spring this year, the Guest List completed their first-ever headline tour, after opening up for indie giants such as Two Door Cinema Club, Inhaler and Blossoms. This momentum shows no signs of stopping, with the band set to head on tour again later this year.
