London-made songstress Katy B (Katy Brien), who dominated the mid-2010s charts with hits like ‘Crying For No Reason’, ‘Lights On’ and ‘Katy on a Mission'’, is back! This time she has teamed up with fellow Londoner, DJ and Record Producer Jax Jones, to produce a high-octane, funky garage track that celebrates the end of summer, appropriately titled ‘Last Day of Summer’. 

It is a small yet mighty track, in that it makes a huge impact despite being only two and a half minutes long. ‘Last Day of Summer’ opens with some strong techno beats before hitting you almost instantly with Brien’s youthful, belty vocal that still manages to translate smoothly over basslines and bouncy jungle rhythms all these years on. 

The track pays homage to Brien’s early career and her dubstep roots — teaming up with Jones allows her to emulate. He can mix heavy, distorted drum sounds and grimy basslines with such ease and fluidity, creating an early 2010s dubstep/garage/jungle sound that does not sound contrived when up against softer, more subtle contemporary pop records. 

The release of the track comes at an exciting time for both artists, who remain proud supporters of underground music culture. Brien has just performed at this year’s Newcastle Pride, and she is also set to make appearances at her own Little Red Rave club event series, which celebrates British Club Culture. Jones also has a series of gigs coming up, including supporting Robin Schulz at the iconic Pacha nightclub in Ibiza this September

All in all, this collab has produced a wonderful track that transports you back to the time of N-Dubz, Skream, Benga and the 2000s South London DIY music scene. A very worthy contender for song of the summer for the sake of nostalgia alone. 

It’s safe to say, ‘Last Day of Summer’ will certainly not leave you crying for no reason, or any reason for that matter!
