The electropop project of Amelia Meath and Nick Sanborn, Sylvan Esso may have just released the song of the summer with their newest single ‘Hot Slob’, out via the pair’s own Psychic Hotline label.
Their second release following a three-year hiatus, the track certainly lives up to its name with catchy lyrics - “yeah I’m a phony but I sell it like something new / yeah, I’m living in the glitch / and I don’t know who I am but I fake it ‘til I make it” - and screeching guitars (thanks to Jenn Wesner of Flock of Dimes who also contributes to backing vocals), all of which helps to encapsulate the messy vibes of the song perfectly.
Hinging on madness throughout its entire almost three-minute run time, ‘Hot Slob’ blends interesting electronic layers and the smoothness of pop to give something unforgettable to listeners, ensuring that they’ll want to return to the track time after time.
The drums (courtesy of TJ Waiani) also deserve a mention here, gifting the song that compelling beat and irresistible flow that’s a staple of every Sylvan Esso track. Paired alongside Sanborn’s thumping basslines, it’s easy to understand why the Americans have gained praise from fans and critics alike.
If there’s one word to describe exactly what Sylvan Esso have made, it’s energetic. From the very first note to the final shriek, it’s loud, distorted and effortlessly cool. With a similar sound to Charli xcx’s 2024 ‘Brat’ and the summer craze that followed, I wouldn’t be surprised to discover that the duo have become a household name in about three years time.
Fun and dripping with confidence, ‘Hot Slob’ marks the start of a new and exciting chapter for the duo. Alongside releasing music, Sylvan Esso are currently embarking on a mini American tour which sees them in venues across states including Chicago and New York.
