Ahead of the release of their debut album ‘Poor Advice’ in October, Irish four-piece Basht. have shared their much-anticipated, post-punk single ‘Keira Knightley’, centred around the emotional realities of relationships built on obsession and desperation. After playing the previously unreleased single throughout the last UK tour, it had become a much-loved track for fans, and the studio version does not disappoint.
The title takes its name from Love Actually, but instead of romanticisation, the track is engulfed in intensity and desperation. The atmospheric opening to the track introduces the more intimate themes, as Jack Leavey’s emotionally-charged vocals slowly build to an energetic post-punk instrumental. The juxtaposition here effortlessly represents the reality of both intense infatuation mistaken to be intimacy in relationships, but also the turmoil and jealousy this results in.
The lyrics continue this theme, with the track exploring desperation and urgency through “I’ll call you daily / hold you tightly”, jealousy in “I’m not sure if he’s just a friend”, and the impact these relationships have on an individual: “am I about to drown / your expectations never-ending”. Even the vocal progression through the song is one of increasing desperation and vulnerability from Leavey, reflected by intensifying guitars and culminating in the final minutes of an addictive, energetic hook about the Love Actually actress.
Based on the reaction at shows when performed unreleased, the charged yet emotional energy the track offers will no doubt make it a fan favourite for future tour dates. This summer, Basht. are set to feature at several UK festivals, including Leeds and Sheffield’s Rock N Roll Circus, before embarking on their own headline UK tour following the release of ‘Poor Advice’ in October.
