A Guide to Metal Festivals

With festival season looming, it can be difficult to wrap your head around what each event entails. In every music niche, there’s a vast selection of events that cater to a certain sound. Metal is one genre that aligns well with festival morale: people flocking together to enjoy a shared interest and feel part of a community. This is something that has maintained high numbers within metal enjoyers across the world.

Download

Donington Park may be home to Download now, but the land's relationship with metal and live events goes back to 1980. Monsters of Rock laid the cement for the reputation that Download now has, with the latter event also having an enormous amount of history. Most of the biggest rock and metal acts of all time have graced this event, including Metallica, Black Sabbath, and Slipknot. Being in such a central location in England, this festival is quite accessible wherever you’re travelling from. With East Midlands Airport a stone's throw away, people flock from all over the world to enjoy this iconic weekender.

Bloodstock

Another central-England metal highlight is Bloodstock. Saxon headlined the first event in 2001, which was a one-day, indoor experience. Over the past twenty-five years, it has expanded into a summer spectacle. What sets Bloodstock apart from the crowd is its sheer devotion to its fanbase as well as up-and-coming artists. Their Metal 2 The Masses competition lets smaller bands showcase their talent. Furthermore, they have a stage named after Sophie Lancaster, a young woman who was murdered for her alternative appearance. Bloodstock proves time and time again that they are committed to honouring the subculture and providing a safe, welcoming event for attendees.

Hellfest

This festival, held in France, is of a huge scale, with a capacity of over 240,000. The official launch took place in 2006 with a powerful first headlining lineup of Saxon, Motörhead, and Dead Kennedys. If you’re a fan of an immersive live experience, this one is definitely for you. With stages built to cater to each sub-genre, there’s a clear emphasis on a thematic, visual approach. Between the six stages, they maintain a structure that allows for multiple bands to play at once. Hellfest is immense in size, structure, and experience. It's certainly worth a visit for all alternative fans, not just metal heads.

Wacken Open Air

Germany is home to Wacken Open Air, a festival that had its humble beginnings back in 1990. The difference between then and now makes it nearly unrecognisable, except for the passion behind the music. This event is known as the ‘Mecca of Heavy Metal’ to fans across the world for its size and notoriety for booking unmissable acts. Whilst some festivals on this list showcase rock and alternative in a broader sense, this festival is metal to its core. Whilst traditional heavy metal is a huge portion of it, Wacken Open Air is known for its showcase of extreme metal. If all this wasn’t enough to entice you, their camping village has both mediaeval and apocalyptic themes.

Whether you’re looking for a large gathering with some of the biggest names in metal or an event to discover some up-and-coming artists, there is a metal festival for every fan.
