Following the release of ‘Sixteen’ in March 2026, American alternative indie-rock band Rainbow Kitten Surprise return with another genre-defying anthem. Recorded alongside the 2025 album ‘bones’, both tracks occupy the same sonic world: thumping rhythms, trance-like looping electric guitar melodies, plus frontwoman Ela Melo’s uniquely dynamic, kinetic vocals and powerful storytelling. 

‘Sixteen’ centres around nostalgia and the teenage fantasy of being “prom queen at sixteen” - a particularly loaded image when read through the lens of teenage Melo’s experience as a closeted trans girl. ‘Never Have I Ever’  builds on this interplay of remembered and fictionalised youth - this time offering fragmented, hazy yet sensorily vivid snatches of a party scene. 

The track’s instrumentals and lyrics draw us into the moment - we feel “sticky like heat”, we hear “this beat” and we experience - through Melo - the dizzying, all-consuming emotions of having a crush. “Never have I ever loved somebody like you” Melo confesses, complaining the object of her intense affection has her “so clueless” and “seeing stars”. Her chant-like cadence and unconventional line-breaks combined with the pulsating beat creates an irresistible flow, compelling the listener to surrender to the music’s momentum - mirroring the breathless, breakneck speed of the adolescent infatuation it explores. It’s intense, but just like being in love aged 16, it's irresistibly fun!

Rainbow Kitten Surprise are currently on the road for The bones World Tour, which sees the band play venues across the UK and Ireland with Cigarettes @ Sunset, before crossing across the pond to play shows in the US, featuring support from indie-rock band Spacey Jane.
