KATSEYE are no strangers to experimenting with their music style. Though they have created pop music, they do tend to blend in elements from other genres, such as R&B (Touch), Rap (Gnarly), and some Latin-Pop influences (Gabriela). Pinky Up is no exception; the track has an energetic hyper-pop feel mixed with elements of EDM, which feels extremely suitable as the group is very well known for their choreography across social media platforms; therefore, a danceable song definitely works for them
The lyrics follow a theme that can be seen across many of their previous works, in which the chorus repeats a few words at most- within this song in particular, the chorus solely consists of them repeating “Pinky Up”. Though the chorus seems simplistic, in a video interview with Melon, member Sophia Laforteza states, ‘This track is a bold, inspired punk anthem about living life to the fullest,’ expanding on the deeper message it conveys. This idea can be seen further represented in the first verse lyrics, “One day, soon, the world’s gonna end / I wanna live large, right before it all burns down”, promoting the notion that people should enjoy life to the fullest and have elegant or luxurious experiences, ‘living large’ whilst they have the time.
A music video was released alongside the song, which features Y2K-inspired outfits, very reminiscent of older girl groups, whilst still feeling modern enough to be exciting. The video contains a heavy amount of flashing lights, which fits in with the EDM, rave-like sound, alongside visuals of the members dancing and making the most of what life has to offer.
With the girls set to perform again at the second weekend of Coachella, the idea of an announcement surrounding what is next in their ‘comeback era’ lingers.
