Wasia Project are officially back, with a brand new single ‘2515’, which seems to have taken a strong tone shift into something much darker, compared to their usual warmth. The sibling duo, Will Gao and Olivia Hardy, best known for their delicate indie-pop sound, are leaning into a more experimental era, which fans are eagerly anticipating.
Immediately, the track feels tense. With a driving pulsing production, a sense of urgency is created. Presenting a much more electronic sound than their previous work, it adopts a sharper delivery to build a dramatic atmosphere. In its entirety, it feels distinctly late-night, introspective, and cyclical, almost like recurring thoughts and emotions. They use strings and piano in a way that’s uncomfortable this time; it feels like it's looming beneath the more prominent, glitchy textures.
Lyrically, the words spill out as an emotional release that seems to have been desperate to be said. The chorus focuses on being broken down by another person, just so that they can feel the validation of saving someone else. The concept of drowning is a recurring point, “You only want to save me / when you see me drown”, is one of the more obvious, but “I lost my voice” also signifies this idea that Hardy’s emotions/thoughts are overwhelming. It’s hinted that these feelings come from the other person through lines like “you go again, and I call it off / I just don’t get it”. Not only are the thoughts weighing her down, but it's also the relationship.
From beginning to end, the track is hypnotic and immersive; it traps you into sharing the exhaustion through Hardy’s vocals. It’s such a promising direction for Wasia Project to be stepping into, replacing softness with chaos by simply reshaping techniques they’ve used before.
