The Maccabees And 86TVs’ Will White Releases New Track ‘When To Stop’

After the success of The Maccabees reunion tour in 2025 and two previous new singles from himself this year, Will White, the youngest of the White brothers, is back focusing on his solo work. His new track ‘When To Stop’ gives off a more raw, in-depth emotional energy as a single that leans into vulnerability and changes typical indie arrangements for something more calm and introspective.

The song lyrically is quite deep, with lyrics like “You were on the depressed express / Only 18 years old” and “You were in an empty hole / Only 15 years old”. It’s almost like White is writing out pinpoints of youth that are marked by confusion, isolation and being overwhelmed emotionally. It holds the recurring idea of literally not knowing “When to stop”, whether it’s healing, a mental spiral or external struggles. It becomes the song’s emotional anchor.

It’s easy to form the imagery in your head as a listener with his lyrics, with “Feeling numb under the Northern Lights” being particularly striking. It juxtaposes something so vast and beautiful with internal issues that reinforces the track’s idea: the world offers so many moments and places of wonder, but they don’t always feel the same when you’re struggling to feel anything at all.

Musically, the single mirrors the restraint that is presented in White’s lyricism. It doesn’t have a big climax or any bold standout moments, it’s just calm and simple. It reflects the tone and meaning of the song in a way that makes it somewhat beautiful. The vocals feel intentionally understated, and don’t overpower the subject matter. This makes the song feel honest and stripped bare, just like the words he’s using to describe such sadness.

When To Stop’ stands out on its own as a single because it resists dramatisation. It doesn’t romanticise the pain that many listeners could feel, nor does it offer easy answers. In releasing and producing this work, White has crafted something that is quietly devastating, a song that doesn’t just ask when to stop, but whether anyone actually really knows the answer.
