Raye has just released her sophomore album ‘THIS MUSIC MAY CONTAIN HOPE.’, three years after the release of her highly acclaimed debut album ‘My 21st Century Blues’.
The opening ‘Intro: Girl Under The Grey Cloud.’ begins with narration from Raye herself, almost as if you’re listening to an audiobook. The lyrics ‘2:27 on a rainy night in Paris’ immediately set a vivid, cinematic scene.
Backed by the London Symphony Orchestra, ‘I Will Overcome.’ emerges as an anthem of determination in a world filled with gloom. Raye uses the track to embody resilience, developing the sense of hope first shown in ‘Intro: Girl Under The Grey Cloud.’ The song illustrates a glimmer of hope in the midst of darkness.
Continuing the album’s blend of classical and contemporary influences, ‘The WhatsApp Shakespeare’ draws from the story of Eve and the Serpent to depict a modern example of romantic manipulation. Like the ‘Genesis.’ EP, the fourth track,‘The WhatsApp Shakespeare.’ features biblical references that build the foundations of the track, including references to the book of Genesis and Raye comparing herself to Lazarus. The lyric "Wherefore art thou, true love?" references Shakespeare's tragedy Romeo and Juliet, accompanied by orchestral strings, highlighting the hopeless romance depicted in the track.
The single ‘Click Clack Symphony.’ featuring the iconic composer and producer Hans Zimmer, appears on the section on the album Raye describes as Winter. The track acts as a reflection on the importance of a good night out. Harsh, dramatic instrumentals form the track, combined with what sounds like heels "marching", the sound of which reminds Raye "that it's going to be alright".
The transition into ‘I Know You’re Hurting.’ alone is enough to bring a tear to your eye. Raye delivers compelling, rich lyricism, and powerful vocals that blend effortlessly with the track’s empowering instruments. As the chorus approaches, pounding drums heighten the emotion. When talking about the track, she explained that she "wrote it about someone I care about a lot, and due to life being very hectic, I couldn’t be there for them. I created it at a time when I didn’t need it, but fast-forward some months, and I’m on the plane bawling to it, because that’s life."
Continuing the album's theme of resilience, ‘Life Boat.’ stands as another track of determination. The lyrics: ‘I’m not giving up yet’ open the song, which Raye revealed on tour was created using voice notes from her family and friends. As the track progresses, a dance beat kicks in, reminiscent of ‘Black Mascara.’, creating the ultimate motivational song. The track blends elements of pop, R&B, and dance, balancing both vulnerability and strength.
With this album being called ‘THIS MUSIC MAY CONTAIN HOPE.’, the music was bound to be optimistic. A particular highlight is ‘WHERE IS MY HUSBAND!’, the album’s lead single, which was released back in 2025. On the track, Raye mixes playful lyricism with flamboyant brass instrumentation, creating a unique flair and vibrant sound.
‘Joy.’ features Raye alongside her sisters: Amma and Absolutely. The track carries the same infectious energy as ‘WHERE IS MY HUSBAND?’, making it the ideal summer anthem. With their ethereal vocals, Absolutely and Amma fit the track’s joyous nature, making it a match made in heaven.
The closing track, ‘Fin.’ opens as a classical piece, with Raye’s voice soaring to new heights. She has a unique take on her closing track. For the final four minutes of the song, Raye names every single person who helped create the album, offering deserved recognition to every contributor.
With ‘THIS MUSIC MAY CONTAIN HOPE.’, Raye doesn’t just evolve, she redefines her artistry. She has showcased her musical growth to the world, marking an evolution from her debut album ‘My 21st Century Blues’. The album explores themes of heartbreak, love, sadness, happiness, and resilience. It stands as a bold, emotionally rich body of work that cements her as one of the most compelling storytellers in modern music.
