The track begins with lighter vocals and an electric guitar strum, giving the lyrics a chance to breathe. Throughout the course of the song, the production itself tells a story. As the narrator begins to describe their increasingly deteriorating mental state, ‘I’m laughing, and I’m crying ‘cause I’m stuck in bed/The laugh track haunts my dream until the bitter end’, more instruments begin to play – the noise getting louder as the narrator’s thoughts do.
Alongside the single comes a music video filmed by Ellen Dixon & Katie Anderson. The video has a 90s retro feel about it, thanks to the warped, fish-eye lens style the video begins with. The video begins by showing Baker stuck in this endless, unproductive loop. As the song becomes more upbeat & louder, we see her dancing around, showing us that despite the track’s deep lyrics, the song is still incredibly catchy and danceable.
The message of the song is vulnerable and extremely honest. It explores the struggle to be productive, something demanded from a society full of ‘hustle culture’ and the five am morning routines we commonly see across social media. The overall narrative helps this song stand out, and in doing so, creates that anticipation to hear the rest of Baker’s album.
