GIRLI: Is it possible to Romanticise Sadness?

Amelia Toomey, also known as GIRLI uses her latest single ‘Romantic Sadness’ to explore what happens when coping mechanisms stop working in the face of tragedy. The chorus starts with an admission, “Run out of ways to romanticize sadness / Now movies and poems don’t cut it.” There’s something so human about how people try to soften the blow of heartbreak by using the media around them. This song acknowledges that, sometimes, though, it is not enough to become a distraction.

While the lyrics carry depth, the song's overall tone gives the listener a breather. There is an upbeatness to the track that gives a sense of hope through its meaningful lyrics. Toomey leans into the feeling of trying anything to get over the hurt one feels, but somehow she makes the listener still want to get up and dance it out.

Just like its message, this song is used as a way to cope with what's happening: When it's hard, I don't know how (How) / To stop me crying over our love (Our love)”. It’s refreshing to hear an artist be vulnerable while also giving a deeper meaning to their work. The acknowledgement that losing a love once thought to be an eternity cannot be forgotten so easily. Sadness is not something that can always be romanticized; it’s something listeners need to remember is real.
