Irish hip-hop group Kneecap return to releasing music following the success of their sophomore album ‘Fine Art’ – this time coming out hard and fast with their track ‘Liars Tale’. The latest release pulls no punches, hurtling through a mind-bending assortment of attacks – focusing on Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, succinctly warning that on Kneecap’s watch, he’s “not getting away with doing nothing”.
Along with the track itself, fans have been blessed with an all guns blazing music video – flooded with imagery of previous leaders “conjured up for foreign policy advice”. The video pairs with the song’s raw, anti-establishment sentiment, ushering in Kneecap’s newest album cycle by re-establishing the trio’s musical and cultural positions. The image of all three members, with their stage names of Mo Chara, Móglaí Bap and DJ Próvaí, positioned under the guillotine is a playful yet significant reminder of the seriousness of the issues their song tackles, as their music continues to be somewhat overshadowed by their evolving legal battles with international governments.
The short, sharp opening to the track sets the tone for the Belfast-based group’s newest offering – an unrelenting, in-your-face assault on the injustices the group have witnessed. Having made a name for themselves with singles such as ‘Get Your Brits Out’ and ‘Guilty Conscience’, the hip-hop group are once again lining themselves up for another widely acclaimed album.
Once again mixing the English and Irish languages to launch scathing attacks on whoever they see fit, this is a trio who have continually evolved their sound, with ‘Liars Tale’ being only the beginning. It’s bold, raucous and laced with the infectious anti-authoritarian nature that is undeniably attractive to their predominantly young audience– and is leaving all of us ready for more.
This single is the first from Kneecap’s upcoming album ‘FENIAN’, which will be released on the 24th of April. Pay close attention to these boys - Kneecap will be back in the headlines very soon. With a rip-roaring first single to whet fans' appetites, in the words of Kneecap themselves, “the paddies are back”.
