Lime Garden Vocalise Being In Their Twenties With ‘23’

Brighton’s Lime Garden are dropping the funkiest new music with single ‘23’ ahead of their upcoming album ‘Maybe Not Tonight’, and it’s definitely giving fans a strong insight into what’s to come.

The song itself demonstrates a confidence in the band that juxtaposes the doubts that come with growing up and chasing ambition. With an almost Happy Mondays-style bassline and punchy vocals, it shows a brilliant development in the band’s sound whilst still staying firmly rooted in their own sharp, modern identity. The guitar circling throughout the song gives an upbeat similarity to that of The 1975 and adds to the track’s funky, indie-pop vibe.

Lead singer Chloe Howard’s lyrics perfectly explain the meaning behind the song. “Something about the fact I’m losing my edge / I’m getting further away from a profit”, accurately describes the feeling of growing up and feeling like you aren’t getting anywhere. It’s like she’s confronting a younger version of herself, capturing the uneasy push and pull between self-belief and self-criticism. That tension is what gives the track its bite. Howard’s vocals are assertive, but there’s a slight undercurrent of vulnerability running through the song that makes the confidence feel earned rather than performative.

Produced by Charlie Andrew, there’s this underground, after-dark feel that nods to artists like LCD Soundsystem without slipping into an imitation. The hooks land quickly and precisely, a clear showcase of the band’s talent for succinct songwriting.

As far as singles ahead of a new album go, ‘23’ sets a clear and impressive tone. It suggests a band that is developing their sound by leaning into groove and melody, at the same time as working on their emotional focus. If this track is anything to go by, Lime Garden aren’t just soundtracking dancefloors and gig venues, they’re using their music as a space for self-examination and growth. The song is filled with this restless energy, making it both thoughtful and irresistibly fun.
