Stepping into the triple-j studio for the second time, American singer-songwriter Dominic Fike performs not one, but two covers for Like A Version to start off 2026.
The first, and longer, cover is Cody Chestnutt’s ‘Boylife in America’. Discussing the song choice, Fike stated: “the lyricism leads the narrative... it feels like everything’s second to the writing. But, everything’s still impressive, because he cared for it”. The singer continued whilst exploring how his writing and song-making process is to an extent similar to what he hears in Chessnutt’s R&B music, a genre Fike often mixes elements of into his own music.
The second cover, surprisingly, was Primus’ iconic ‘South Park Theme’, at only twenty-six seconds total. In his interview, he justified the choice by saying, “I love South Park, I watch it every night to go to sleep”, despite it potentially being a rogue choice in the eyes of the audience. For Fike, the song is part of his everyday routine.
Following, he stated: “It feels optimistic when the episode starts, and it’s funny throughout, which is how I prefer life,” this being the prime reasoning behind his viewing the show quite often despite its humour being often described as dark and crude.
The singer closed off his time in the studio with a rendition of his own song ‘Epilogue’, the song being from his most recently released EP ‘Rocket’, released last August. The song is extremely suitable for a live, laid-back acoustic version as it delves into Fike’s journey throughout life, not shying away from topics such as previous mistakes but remaining raw and authentic.
