'SO CLOSE TO WHAT???': A Journey Through Tate McRae’s Heart

With her Miss Possessive Tour over, Tate McRae decided to bless her fans with the deluxe edition of her third studio album ‘So Close to What’, which was initially released at the beginning of the year - just before they began. The album reached number one on the Billboard 200, and although it was shut out of a Grammy nomination, fans went feral over the vibe: iconic, intimate, heartfelt.
Upon a first look at the deluxe edition, a notable difference is the name. Now titled 'SO CLOSE TO WHAT???', fans are immediately hit with the prospect of new additions to the tracklist showing a different side of love. The album is presented in a more upsetting light and the five new songs hold a deeper, possibly depressing tone, as if she has questioned the meaning of love that the original tracks were quick to pinpoint.

Another key visual difference is the capitalisation of every letter. Could this be because McRae is trying to make the audience focus on the meaning behind them due to some aspects being previously ignored by others?

The album now begins with ‘TRYING ON SHOES’, a slow yet effective track that contrasts the confidence seen in the majority of those later. The violin adds emotional depth and begins to slowly hint at the sadness some of the original songs held.

‘ANYTHING BUT LOVE’ is more accusational. Tate’s vocals are perfect here with some fans arguing that it holds her best vocals yet. The story behind it is clear: a post-breakup anthem about someone’s refusal to call a relationship love and its ultimate demise. ‘NOBODY’S GIRL’ is appreciated by many as she weaves her own personal experiences into the lyrics. Her conviction begins to build from here, leaning into her independence through confessions and taunts, as if she is reflecting how she began to recover from the initial betrayal.

Further illuminating her message in an angelic manner is HORSESHOE’ . It’s slower than the previous track, and the title connotes luck. As listeners focus on the lyrics, it is clear that she utilised this metaphor as sarcasm, paired with a catchy chorus.

‘TIT FOR TAT’ was released in September, and hit number five on the Billboard Hot 100. It is said to be a direct retaliation to her ex-boyfriend’s (The Kid Laroi) new song, and although this hasn’t been confirmed, the hints are crystal clear. This then blends seamlessly into the main bulk of the album, which begins with 'Miss possessive' and continues as it did in the original release.

The new tracks follow Tate McRae on a journey of acceptance, beginning with her initial self-doubt in ‘TRYING ON SHOES’, all the way through to ‘TIT FOR TAT’, which embodies the confidence fans have begun to associate with the artist.
