Right as the song opens, the reverb on the guitar is prominent and intriguing. It accompanies the lead guitar riff nicely, resulting in a full-bodied track. The instrumentation feels thoughtful; it’s clear this is a band who are well-versed in playing together. Musically, each instrument - guitars especially - accompanies the other rather than being overbearing. They have the upbeat yet retrospective feel of the post-punk sound.
There’s a nostalgic quality to the single, especially within the dramatic vocal style and lead guitar - with similarities to post-punk and new wave: think Joy Division with Ian Curtis’ distinct voice.
Moving further into the track, the guitar solo break creates a pause within the song’s structure. It definitely plays a part in keeping the song fresh and vibrant from beginning to end.
It's also important to note how, like many modern psychedelic rock bands, Herds are freshly interpreting this sound. As the genre was popularised over sixty years ago, it could be easy to make a repetitive track. Yet this band has managed to pull from later influences whilst still adding a unique take through their own artistry.
‘Inside’ is the first teaser of the band’s upcoming third album, and with over a decade of experience - including support slots with Hawkwind and Jethro Tull - if this latest release is anything to go by, then this could be the strongest record from Herds so far.
