Garage rock-inspired artist Dogmile has released their debut EP titled ‘Static Retracted’. The four-track release dropped on 21st October and provides listeners with a dreamy soundscape. The EP follows two single releases, both of which are included on this latest release. The release is a solo effort, including the production, and yet feels polished whilst still being free to explore creatively.
The opener, ‘Orbit’, is a layered track that is mellow yet complex. The drumming, as it comes to a close, is a real highlight. The New Mexico-based artist seems to have a talent for experimenting with the small features of each song, whilst being able to keep the piece as a whole fluid and enjoyable. A great example of this is the groovy bassline, which lingers in the back throughout.
Following this is ‘Alright’, one of the tracks previously released as a single. The acoustic guitar, which brings the listener into the song, has a tone of indie rock and bedroom pop. This is furthered by the laid-back and loose drum beat as well as the subtle effects on the lead vocals. The atmosphere of these first two songs certainly has an element of nostalgia thrown in. They both feel like a distant memory, whilst also creating a noise which doesn’t feel outdated or overused.
The guitar riff that begins ‘Fellup’ is somewhat reminiscent of Red Hot Chili Peppers in the back-end of the nineties. This sound combines nicely with the electronic edge of the track. It adds an element of modern psychedelic sounds, such as Tame Impala. This electronic nod elevates the song to a new level and certainly completes the sound.
As the EP comes to a close, heavy distortion vibrates through ‘Well’s Run Dry’. This track is a fuller and more impactful sound than its predecessors. Having it close the selection of tracks feels like the perfect idea to build momentum and keep the sound dynamic. It has a heavier and darker atmosphere than what came before it. A welcome shift as the listening experience draws to a close.
‘Static Retracted’ doesn’t leave the listener time to ponder for too long. With two songs having a playtime of under two minutes, the experience of this release is short and sweet. There’s an element of homemade creation in the best way. The EP feels as though it has been made with a kind of love and care that is personal and meaningful. Dogmile is a great example of an artist where you can feel the enjoyment and dedication in every track they release.
