Sam Fender and Elton John have teamed up for what might be the collab of the year on ‘Talk to You’. Coming from Fender’s upcoming album ‘People Watching (Deluxe)’, out on the 5th of December, it’s everything and more than what’s expected from a single released by the current hottest voice in UK music.
Rich and full-bodied, it’s the Mercury Prize winner in a dazzling and more mature light.
Describing the grief that arrives from losing a treasured relationship and the guilt that ensues, as demonstrated by Sam’s striking lyricism “wanna let go of everything I carry, wanna shoulder some of yours instead” / “my failures are my prized possessions”, the song is a raw and touching conversation between artist and listener, made for anyone who’s ever lost someone close to them.A collection of thrumming bass, twinkling piano lines (courtesy of John), and the Geordie’s signature guitar-led rhythms, it’s a cinematic masterpiece wrapped up into just five minutes with Sam’s soulful vocals thrown in for good measure.
The explosion of the ending, filled with a wailing guitar solo complemented by rhythmic and tantalising drums, lets the track truly have a voice of its own. Never missing the mark of stunningly showcasing the ambition of the thirty-something-year-old.
The track fits right with the vibes of his third album (released way back in February), and the messy and melancholic nature of it all leaves me enraptured to see what Fender’s got up his sleeve on the deluxe edition.
