Serene Indie Confessions Forged from Heartbreak: 'Year of Trouble' By Stella Donnelly

Indie singer Stella Donnelly pours her heart out on the beautiful new single ‘Year of Trouble’.

The Australian-born artist’s newest release is an emotional catharsis that tells the story of a relationship that didn’t quite work out, making for a heartfelt song that is only further enhanced by the unbridled emotion Donnelly sings with.

“It’s all been my fault / a year of trouble” - is a line which has noticeable undertones of self-deprecation and regret. This select chorus lyric is a prime example of thoughtful, raw confessions that reiterate feelings of sadness and unavoidable heartbreak, the latter setting the tone for the song and being a crucial theme throughout.

The song has evocative background acoustics, which heighten the emotional feel of the song; the usage of the piano throughout provides a sweet, serene melody to achieve this. At first, the piano notes are short and staccato amongst the calm backdrop, the perfect accompaniment to angelic vocals.

Towards the end of the track, the crescendo of the piano notes culminates in a final legato structure, which brings back the emotive nature, creating an ending that is a crystal-clear indication of how powerful yet heartbreaking ‘Year of Trouble’ truly is.
