The queen of heartbreak pop strikes again with her newest single, ‘Ripped Jeans’. A stunning follow-up from Lunar June’s (real name Olivia Judd) previous releases, including ‘Let Me Love You’ and ‘always been u’.
It balances the sadness of breakups with the fun, catchy beat that June has meticulously crafted.
Written to her ex, June can write what we’ve always wanted to say with lyrics such as “I ripped my heart out to keep hold of you” and “I wanted to give but you couldn’t take.” ‘Ripped Jeans’ is a song for all those who have had their hearts broken. It’s cathartic and intimate and truly speaks to you, the listener.
The song is made by the punchy drums, which add a layer of energy to the track without taking the attention away from June’s dreamy vocals.
Near the middle, the song builds with group chanting, further highlighting her strength for building intimacy between listener and artist before fading, where June’s vocals really come into their own. Then the song revives itself again, a semi-explosion of sound and a beautiful metaphor for the pain and anger that derive from loss.
‘Ripped Jeans’ is everything that you need in a breakup song. Blissful melodies, truthful lyrics and the acceptance of a failed relationship ensure that there’s something for everyone and is sure to become a fan favourite.
