The London-based Y are an up-and-coming group making waves in the alternative rock scene for their eccentric genre-defying sound.
Their latest release ‘Skipper’ comes off the back of the eponymous debut EP and is a prime example of how they push boundaries, a wild ride of various instruments - from shredding electric guitars to saxophones and synthesisers - packed into a fun and upbeat tune that clocks in at just under four minutes long.
Acoustics form a strong foundation for the track, with different musical devices providing multiple layers. When combined with the hauntingly powerful vocals of lead singer Sophie Coppin, it enhances the record’s quality. Coppin also plays the synth heard at the beginning in a Nine Inch Nails-style introduction, with the ability to draw listeners in before a sharp transition to jazz-infused rock. The prominent use of jazz instruments blended with high-tempo beats throughout gives the song a similar feel to the works of Caravan Palace.
Overall, ‘Skipper’ is an enjoyable listen, cementing Y as ones to watch.
Y are set to perform at Mutations Festival in Brighton on the 7th of November.
