Home Counties Share Love Letter To London’s Flat Roof Pubs On 'Meet Me In The Flat Roof'

Home Counties love a pub, and on ‘Meet Me in the Flat Roof’, they go above and beyond to show their appreciation for these rare boozers while also talking about their inevitable gentrification.

For those who don’t know, Home Counties are a six-piece band from London who have been killing it over the last couple of years. Their music has flavours of post-punk, pop, alt-rock, and dance, and covers topics ranging from shitty landlords to gentrification, and does so with plenty of flair.

Their new single continues their stellar run, beginning with bleeping synths and vocalist Will Harrison's spoken-word lyrics, “The floor / Décor / It’s like travelling back in time”. They highlight the appeal of these pubs while discussing how they push out the original patrons, with a voice-modulated lyric going, “People like them coming in here / and driving the prices up”.

The song gradually builds, with an impressive mix of backing vocals and an art-rock aesthetic leading to a flurry of guitars and the band shouting, “Never seen a scrap like that before”. It’s impressive that the band can create a song that manages to juggle so much and keep your attention for its runtime, with its mixture of unique, specific lyricism and patient but punchy production. With 'Meet Me In The Flat Roof', Home Counties more than prove they’re a band that should be on your radar.
