After hours of fans waiting outside Manchester Academy on Sunday, the line stretched down the street by the time the doors opened. Eager to secure a spot at the barricade for Finn Wolfhard, the room was filled in minutes.
Despite Finn’s acting catapulting him into the limelight, music has always been part of his life and his passion - a way to express himself.
Setting out on his first solo tour, the Objection! Tour, must have been such a fulfilling moment in his musical career as he showcased his debut album ‘Happy Birthday’ to the world.
To kick off the night, The Slaps took to the stage. As both the opening act and the backing band for Finn’s solo music, they wowed the crowd with their talent and drive throughout the entire performance. The Slaps don’t tie themselves to any one genre, in fact, they pride themselves on their improvisation and spontaneity. From their opening set, you could tell they experimented with their sound as they transitioned seamlessly from a folk sound to something more rock. They kept the audience completely captivated, creating an almost otherworldly atmosphere when they requested their sound engineer to “make these people really wonder what’s going on in here”. With layered instruments and added reverb, they transformed the room into an echo chamber of sound, delivering an unpredictable end to the set.
There was only a short amount of time before Finn came on stage, but his fans were getting restless already. They began chanting his name, hoping to see even a glimpse of him. Although when the wait to see him was over, there was a short pause while he tuned his guitar, building a little more anticipation. However, the moment the first notes of ‘Everytown There’s a Darling’ were heard ,the audience erupted into screams, quickly followed by yelling the lyrics.
Compared to his studio versions, Finn’s performance brought a more forceful energy to the room, with a delivery that felt bolder and more emotionally charged. He’d often jump straight into the next song, blending them together even if their pace was completely different. He was in complete control of the momentum, only slowing down when he decided to. The fans matched this energy perfectly, letting every emotion out as they shouted along to their favourite songs. Although it was ‘Choose The Latter’ that definitely stood out as a cathartic moment, particularly during the chorus. It had fans jumping around uncontrollably just like Finn was on stage.
He even commented on the intensity of the crowd, noting how they’d been dancing all night and how much he appreciated everyone in the room. Even when the venue fell silent, it wasn’t for long due to the fans. They were chanting his name, shouting “Hi” to him, to which he’d respond back and wave, followed by “I love you” and “marry me Finn”, they were doing anything to get his attention. Some even brought signs with similar messages.
For ‘No Offerings’ Finn goes over to begin playing the keyboard, whilst Lunar Vacation takes centre stage, which seemed to take everyone by surprise. This collaboration had a much more delicate and soft tone, offering a calm, introspective break in the set. Followed by ‘You’ and ‘Wait’, the power of Finn’s voice had its time to really shine through as it was paired with more relaxing instrumentals. The room fell silent for these hypnotic tracks, giving them every ounce of attention and admiration they deserved.
No show would be complete without an encore. After taking a moment to soak it all in, Finn left the stage, only to return minutes later to the chanting of his name. He took his position at the keyboard, ready to play ‘Happy Birthday’, the title track of his album. A stillness came over the room as the song served as a reflection on time you’ve potentially wasted - his vulnerability was met with the loudest round of applause. The concert now really was coming to a close, with ‘Trailers After Dark’ and ‘Crown’ left, fans had one last chance to dance their hearts out together.
