Arguably one of indie music’s most underrated bands, Brighton four-piece Fickle Friends are amplifying anticipation for their third studio album with their latest single, ‘Joe’.
After the release of ‘Feral’ in October last year, their first track back after a two-year hiatus from putting out music, the band have released five more singles that prove they’re back with a bang and a new wave of creativity that’s fuelling their latest work.
Having spent over a decade making music together, what’s special about Fickle Friends is that they still manage to nail their original and recognisable sound, without any releases ever feeling stagnant or overdone. Pushing the boat out with melodies, rhythms, and even structure of songs, whilst still capturing their unmistakable style, is a concept the band are no strangers to, and ‘Joe’ proves it.
As explained by frontwoman Natassja Shiner, the single “captures the thrills (and the meltdowns) of new love. That rush when everything feels electric, but your brain won’t stop whispering, ‘it’s too good to be true.’ It’s messy, irrational… bringing out the unhinged side in even the most measured people. We took that jittery, overthinking energy and bottled it in a bold, chaotic, indie-pop anthem.”
From the get-go, it’s infectious and cathartic; an immediate burst of energy that perfectly encapsulates the rush, excitement, and nerves of a new relationship. Kickstarting with the lyrics, “I just need a little reassurance today, would you love me if I was a worm?”, it doesn’t take itself too seriously, and it’s obvious the four-piece are unapologetically having fun making music they love again.
With a combination of fast-paced percussion, punchy guitars, and euphoric hooks, ‘Joe’ is an addictive earworm from the get-go, and captures what feel-good indie-pop is all about.
With their new album set for release on 7th November, alongside a UK tour the same month, the end of 2025 is looking very promising for Fickle Friends.
