A Heartful Revelation: Foo Fighters Return With ‘Asking for a Friend’

“What is real?” Foo Fighters’ gritty new single ‘Asking For a Friend’ - that’s what!

As shared by Dave Grohl, the song is “for those who have waited patiently in the cold, relying on hope and faith for their horizon to appear.” A feeling that Grohl became revolutionised by, through an intimate moment while witnessing the natural beauty of Mt. Fuji, Japan.

Their new single has transformed them back into the iconic voice, belting and cymbal-smashing beloved band, with a new lineup. The Foo’s previous drummer, Josh Freese, was dismissed from the band without explanation, according to his social media post in May 2025. Since then, the band has hired Nine Inch Nails’ drummer, Ilan Rubin, who features on the new track.

‘Asking For a Friend’ feels reminiscent of the broody and dark style of their 2011 album ‘Wasting Light.’ The song’s slow and measured introductory chorus is abruptly ended by the sharp and punchy riffs of guitarist Chris Shiflett and the marching build-up of Rubin’s drumming.

At the one-minute mark, you’re suddenly hit with the nostalgic combination of Foo Fighters' rock. The power emitting from Rubin’s drum fills and Grohl’s insanely raspy vocals is certainly a classic headbanger. Later in the song, the tempo picks up pace as it enters the bridge, arguably the best point in several Foo Fighters' songs - again very reminiscent of tracks from ‘Wasting Light’, including ‘Dear Rosemary’ and ‘Arlandria'.  Into the final chorus, the energy feels high and dominating, a satisfying end to another brilliant hard rock song.

Despite the change of drummer, the new single feels recognisably Foo Fighters. On the day of releasing their new song, the band also announced a 2026 stadium tour of the United States and Canada. As teased by Grohl, ‘Asking for a Friend’ is “one of many songs to come…” The future of Foo Fighters still seems as refreshing as ever.
