The Beaches Are Proud And Beyond Loud In New Sapphic Anthem ‘Lesbian Of The Year’

Ahead of their North American tour, Canadian rock band The Beaches have released their latest single, ‘Lesbian Of The Year’. It’s taken from their upcoming album, ‘No Hard Feelings’, which drops on 29th August.

The single, which is centred around guitarist and keyboardist Leandra Earl’s experience of coming to terms with her own sexuality, moves away from the more upbeat sound of previous singles, particularly ‘Jocelyn’ and ‘Last Girls At The Party‘.
Instead, it has a much slower and somewhat more reflective tempo, allowing the band’s main vocalist, Jordan Miller, to use her trademark, raspy belt and a skilful amount of vocal fry (and cry) when taking the lead, thus producing a more refined sound.
With a runtime of three-and-a-half minutes, the track packs a punch and has a smooth ending which helps round off a song so fuelled by pathos and passion with ease and class—Miller’s vocals fade out gradually, along with the melody.
Lyrics such as, “I can’t hold your secrets, got my own to deal with / Mom thinks I’ll find a man, she’ll never understand” and, “Wish I had the answers for a friend of Dorothy”, land almost too well and reinforce that the band are continuing to prioritise their unapologetically candid, bold and well-crafted lyrics above all else.
The Beaches are proud and beyond loud in this new sapphic anthem that combines bold lyrics, brave messaging, and belted vocals—allowing them to maintain their very own bohemian, soft-rock sound.
When you have this track stuck on repeat, don’t blame Brett, blame The Beaches!
