The American punk rock band Rise Against have finally returned with their 10th album, ‘Ricochet’.
The album’s title track stands out as a defining song that proves they still have the fire which burnt for the first time over two decades ago, winning over the hearts of thousands. Rise Against have never been a band to shy away from impressive energy and presence, so this is exactly what fans have been waiting for.
Those who are familiar with Rise Against will agree that no song trumps another, but there will always be a favourite amongst them and this is a confident contender.
The video immediately opens with a quote from George Orwell, setting the tone for its theme. By using Orwell, it encourages a challenge to political hypocrisy and addressing corruption within the system whilst playing clips of war, destruction and devastation. The video mirrors the song’s build-up by starting with quieter, almost acoustic elements before rapidly changing to a more ferocious tempo. The video is a high energy piece directed by Kai Dickson, and as the music starts to build it provides a very unnerving contrast between people dancing and people suffering through acid bombs and war, showing the juxtaposition between the joys and problems in the world.
It is a turbulent video, perfectly capturing Rise Against’s dynamics and their ability to instil a sense of recognition whilst vocals by frontman Tim McIlrath deliver his signature intensity, blending vulnerability and defiance in a way that binds listeners through shared struggles.
The song ‘Ricochet’ has a rich thematic push and pull dynamic to draw the listeners in, grabbing the attention of the listener by tugging at emotions. The intense use of questions like “Are we okay, are we alright?” acknowledges that these struggles aren’t just happening to others: they’re happening to all of us. This simmers with an hidden message of resilience and resistance whilst upholding a ferocious melody.
In support of the release, Rise Against are currently touring across the U.S., with more festival dates to be announced soon. For all those lifelong fans and those who are new to Rise Against, ‘Ricochet’ is a testament to the band’s wild spirit and commitment to addressing relevant themes.
