As so many notoriously unique bands do, Rainbow Kitten Surprise began in a humble American dorm room and broke into the musical scene with passionate determination.
Also known simply as RKS, the past decade has been a whirlwind for them, from playing festivals to their own live shows and releasing more and more music to their ever-growing fan base.
They act not only as a source of solace and calm amongst an ever-changing, fast-paced society, but also as a figure of comfort. Fans know that when the going gets tough, there remains the chance to listen to their favourite RKS track and melt into the music, feel the lyrics in their bones and the melody passing through their bloodstream.
Recently, RKS have released their new single ‘Dang’, an ode to intimacy in friendship. It stands to envelope us in love and queerness in all of its beauty, whilst reminding fans of their crucial role in the success of the band. There’s always a connection between musician and fanbase, but RKS seem to consistently surpass this barrier; they float into genuine passion and dedication to their fans, and this has never been clearer than in this single. The simple meta lyrics of “Better let the band play, and the band plays” allow us this insight into the track's meaning, how it navigates these special relationships and turns to focus on community and sense of belonging. The phrase is accompanied by a sudden change of pace and volume, a picking up of the melody as they throw down the message of togetherness and consequent love.
They take time with us to reflect on a journey whilst musically hinting at the long drive, open windows and volume to the max vibe the single encourages. We cannot help but imagine this tune on every summer playlist as friends are embraced, arguments called to a halt, and the world looks that little bit brighter.
