Foo Fighters Celebrate 30 Years With Rocking New Ballad, 'Today’s Song'

Dave Grohl and his cast of merry men are one of rock’s most easily recognisable acts, but they’re also quite a contradictory band.

Most of Foo Fighters’ hits are uplifting, rock ballads, barn burners, bangers, or any combination of the three, from ‘My Hero’ to ‘Everlong’

Despite how inspiring their music can be, the band has been tangled in tragedy since its inception. Grohl recorded the first Foo Fighters album as a method of recovering from the death of his former Nirvana bandmate, Kurt Cobain.

Their second album, ‘The Colour and The Shape’, was heavily influenced by Grohl’s divorce at the time, and their 2023 album, ‘But Here We Are’, was all about their long-time drummer, Taylor Hawkins, who had passed away the year prior.

It’s no shock, then, that ‘Today’s Song’, is also something of an uplifting power ballad that comes at a difficult time. The song, which was released to celebrate 30 years since the release of their first album, is dedicated to all of the band’s former members, including Hawkins and their latest drummer, John Freese, who was fired by the band just this past May. As such, ‘Today’s Song’ - which is standard hard-rock balladry from the band - fits quite well into their discography.

“It may take a lifetime to find you” sings Grohl at the song’s halfway point. It’s a sad and touching reminder of all the people that he and the band have lost throughout the years.

In a letter from Grohl, on the band’s website, he says: “Over the years, we’ve had moments of unbridled joy, and moments of devastating heartbreak. Moments of beautiful victory, and moments of painful defeat. We have mended broken bones and broken hearts. But we have followed this road together, with each other, for each other, no matter what. Because in life, you just can’t go it alone”.

There’s no better way, than that, to describe ‘Today’s Song’, and the band as a whole. We all suffer great pain, that’s just a fact of life, but it can be alleviated and uplifted by others, and we can help others through their pain. It’s a beautiful sentiment from one of rock’s most consistently thoughtful, mainstream bands, and it’s nice to know they’re still putting in the work after all this time.
