Black Honey's Spellbinding 'Shallow'

Indie-rock quartet, Black Honey, have released ‘Shallow’, the fourth single off their upcoming album, ‘Soak’.

The track is social commentary wrapped up in spellbinding imagery and layered with moody instrumentals, protesting against “brain rot” and social media for making us “shallow”.

Frontwoman, Izzy B. Phillips’ vocals are hypnotic on this track, as they swoop you into her sonic kingdom and have you clinging on to every beat. The song explodes into an anthem around its chorus, with the band throwing the word “shallow” at you, on repeat, like sucker punches.

It’s a brutal yet necessary insight into social media’s impact on us, urging us to assess our own complicity in cultivating the culture it critiques. The mystical backing track makes the song one that must be heard live, but before we can comfortably scream the lyrics back at them, we must consider how we relate to the words.

Black Honey want us to be unsettled, at least initially, to work through our discomfort so that this song becomes catharsis rather than confrontation.

Shallow’ is unapologetic, bold, and a stellar addition to the band’s catalogue. With the track following three similarly triumphant singles, it’s safe to say that ‘Soak’ is shaping up to be the band’s best work yet.
