Ahead of her upcoming third album, ‘Girl Violence’, Brooklyn-based artist Mikaela Mullaney Straus, known better by the stage moniker King Princess, has dropped the debut track, amusingly titled ‘RIP KP’.
If this single is anything to go by, us listeners are in for a surprise come September 12th.
At 26-years-old, Straus has built a notable career while signed to acclaimed producer Mark Ronson’s label Zelig Records. Their debut studio album ‘Cheap Queen’ was a quiet commercial success, making just enough noise in the right spaces, and earning a respectable score of 7.4 from Pitchfork Magazine. The online music magazine themselves applauded the debut for its “effortless swagger” and ability to combine classical influences with a modern pop twist, all under Straus’ signature themes of sapphic desire.
These elements are consistently present in the new single and will please such a dedicated fanbase, increased somewhat after a feature on the soundtrack of Netflix’s animated ‘Arcane’ series. Perfect for fans of Reneé Rapp, the lyrics are cheeky, suggestive and wonderfully gay, singing of how “her lips look like cherry ice with whipped cream” over an undeniably filthy bass. Not a simile for the lactose intolerants out there.
Straus’ instrumentals are tech-heavy, full of ticking snares and simple chord progressions over verses and the bridge while we’re told that their “girl could destroy your life”. It’s all rather intense, later culminating in a cacophony of synth-shrieks before an abrupt ending. Punters of rainbow-adorned queer venues across the country are sure to be humming that chorus for days.
