London-based band Keo has just released its sensational debut EP ‘Siren’.
Through five songs, it expertly reflects on regret and anger, showcasing the emotional maturity that is usually not expected from such a young band.
‘I Lied, Amber’ is a stunning opener to ‘Siren’ and sets up the whole EP to be a wonderful listening experience. The messy, unpolished sound pulls you in as the band’s emotional vulnerability acts like a punch straight to the gut. 'I Lied, Amber' is one of the slower songs to the EP but still highlights the artists' exceptional talent which has been honed and refined through years of touring and playing.
The second song ‘Hands’ follows up nicely from the preceding track. It’s a more frantic and urgent track, but follows the same theme as the first — wanting to make up for the mistakes of the past but not knowing how to.
Finn Keogh’s vocals complement the song nicely while the guitars and drums take the song forward. There’s a Wunderhorse element that can be heard throughout the song, but Keo’s distinct sound still shines through.
‘Thorn’ is the absolute highlight of the EP. Cutting cleanly through the somber of the previous tracks, the slow start gradually builds into a song infused with the grief of heartbreak. The band’s powerful lyricism is especially showcased through the lyric “cause you’re under my skin, where I keep you tucked in” which demonstrates how hard it is to let those you once loved go. The wailing guitars which are heard throughout the song are quite cathartic and allow the piece to truly come into its own.
Acoustic guitars gently start ‘Stolen Cars’ which gives ‘Siren’ a chance to catch its breath. The gentler start also creates an intimate feel to the EP, allowing fans to feel a genuine connection to the band and its music. The little guitar solos that pepper the track and build up to the chorus flaunt the young band’s talent to stand out in the world of indie rock. ‘Stolen Cars’ is one of those songs that deserves a spot on a setlist and would be sure to get the crowd singing along.
Unfiltered and unflinching, ‘Kind, If You Will’ is a song that shows Keo at its best. It’s a testament to the band’s hard work and relentless determination which has brought ‘Siren’ into the world. The instruments work together to make this song hauntingly beautiful and one to remember. Opening and the introspective lyric “I can’t accept that you’ve changed your mind” follows along with the pain that arrives with losing love and again highlights the musicians' songwriting skills.
And finally, ‘Kind, If You Will’ closes the EP and leaves you wishing for more.
Short and sweet, ‘Siren’ is a promising start to the journey of Keo and proves that the band is not just chasing the high, it's creating it.
