Could George Lyons’ ‘LOLA’ Be The Song Of The Summer?

Irish indie-pop artist, George Lyons, is set to burst onto the up-and-coming music scene after his release, ‘LOLA’, on Friday, 13th June. An unlucky day for some, but Lyons’ latest release has already seen his first radio play and over 5,000 listens on release day alone.

Following a trip to LA in April earlier this year, Lyons has teased the release of his debut single with a range of retro-style promotional videos overlayed with the song's catchy lyrics and presented like an old school music video. Initially teasing the chorus, “I said Lola don't trip your lips / girl they taste like Coca-Cola”, Lyons introduced the song's carefree vibes, upbeat tempo and catchy lyrics.

The camcorder-style promo videos have only kept on coming, adding a seamless transition into the overall vibe for the song's promo, largely drawing on the colours and retro style of the Coca-Cola aesthetic. Upon teasing one of the song's verses, Lyons showcased his diverse musical ability through a fast-paced rap with an indie pop twist - think ‘Sally’ by Role Model combined with the infectious rap beats of Dominic FikePaired with a range of adlibs, which appear alongside the lyrics and during instrumental sections, Lyons and his team have created a tune akin to the 2000s pop beats, which you just can't help but dance along to.

When discussing the release of ‘LOLA’ and the origins of the songwriting process in a recent TikTok Q&A, Lyons referenced the original inspiration of the song as Kolegeras Sisters, who are currently taking TikTok by storm, particularly the name of older sister Sunday. Lyons described how his interest in the unique name originally sparked the songwriting process, and the shift to “Lola” was made over time. Recently, Lyons has also discussed on TikTok live videos his love for basing songs around a name, even considering creating his future project based on this idea (similar to New Rules’ ‘Name Song’ EP) whilst songwriting.

Lyons took to Instagram and declared ‘LOLA’ to be a moment of magic after spending 8 hours trying to record a pretty depressing song. It is clear that Lyons’ release of music, which is gonna make you wanna be 19 again - think 2016 pop realness - likely marks the beginning of his exciting music career ahead.
