BEX: The Nu-Punk Order

Music Is To Blame catches up with BEX during a busy June, which sees her highly anticipated Download Festival 2025 appearance and the release of electrifying new record, ‘Polixtix’

A true champion of Nu-Punk, BEX opens up about her inspirations, the art of balancing multiple creative roles, and the surreal whirlwind she's currently riding. Through pounding basslines and unapologetically feminist lyrics, she crafts a space of joy and solidarity—an artist truly worth watching.

For any of our readers who may not know you, please introduce yourself.

Hi am BEX, I am an artist from Northampton. I create angry girl Nu-Punk to raise awareness of all the things that suck in the world. I make music using two basses and no guitar. I like to push myself to make new sounds using the same instrument. I design and create all my BEX stage clothes and merchandise. BEX is a world that we are creating together (my community and I) to avoid the negativity and greyness of the “real world”. The ‘scum club’ is growing every day and together we breed creativity.

Do you have a specific creative or writing process?

There’s many ways a song can come about but my favourite is heading to the studio with my producer Sam Cramer, getting really worked up on the train to London and then exploding as soon as I get there. The best tracks always start with me walking into the studio saying, “the weirdest thing happened on the way here”. My favourite BEX songs have been written with Sam, he gets the vision, he gets the sound, he gets the message. As for the process, I always start with a meaty bass riff, no matter if I’m writing with anyone or on my own, the tracks always start with a nice riff

How do you balance creating music projects, running your own clothes line, managing socials and I believe a 'normal' job at the weekend?

Quite simply... I don’t! Hahah. I find it hard to fit everything I want to do in to the day, I tend to get up around 7 am and work until 11/12 pm every night. Every two weeks or so I’ll have a night or two off and see some friends but the rest of the time I am juggling everything. I work for a pizza company some weekends. I tend to give my fashion 2 days a week and the rest of the time I am consumed in the musical world of BEX. It’s a very random ‘job’ every week and day is so different and unpredictable.

Your most recent release is ‘Politix ’, what can you tell us about it?

‘Politix’ is political is so many ways that it’s not political at all. It’s about creating our own world where we can be in charge, we can control the media and the propaganda. A world of creativity and freedom. Equality and respect. ‘Politix’ reflects on the ‘mosh pit’ as the closest thing to feeling that world in real life, even if it’s just for thirty minutes.

In 2023 you had a Download Festival petition to play the show. In 2024 you played the festival. And now in 2025 you are back again, that's a pretty awesome journey. How are you finding this journey?

Absolutely crazyyyyy!! It’s so awesome to put myself out there and actually get something for it. I put my entire heart and soul and mind into this ‘project’ and to get to share it on stage at download this weekend is just crazy! I hope the journey never ends.

As well as Download this summer, you are supporting The Haunt and playing Pride, Rock Rebellion, and Boomtown. It must be a pretty exciting time seeing your name attached to some huge events?

Crazy is just the only word I have! I’ve always imagined it, but to see it in real life is surreal. A lot of the time I get swept up and I don’t even realise how big these milestones are!

You're forging your own path in music with a 'Nu Punk', unique and DIY approach. What inspired this direction, and how do you see it evolving in the future?

Vivienne Westwood is my biggest inspiration, everything she built in her lifetime is so admirable. I take a lot of inspiration from Taylor Momsen, not only in the Pretty Reckless but also the character ‘Jenny’ she played in Gossip Girl. The drive and passion to achieve her dreams and not let anything stand in her way.

I love doing everything myself, it feels like the only way that it’s entirely authentic! The future of nupunk is unknown but in my eyes, I want to see it grow, I want to see it take over the charts and become the next pop genre. I want to go BIG!

You make use of two bass guitars at your shows and have been known to go without guitars and drums. Does this unique style add complexities for you and would you like to evolve into a full band or are you keen to stay as you are?

I loveee using two basses, the most underrated instrument! I have a live drummer also, it’s been a good year since we played to a track! I love having a band live, it adds so much more energy and lets me see my songs come to life! Because we write in a studio, gigs are sometimes the first time I get to hear my tracks with a full band!
