The Cool Girls Are Calling For A CMAT Summer With The Stellar, Sincere ‘Take A Sexy Picture Of Me’

Irish artists have been dominating the media this past year, from the momentous rise of Fontaines D.C. to fresh names popping up such as snappy rapper KhakiKid.

CMAT has arguably taken the crown this past week, as her name floods the algorithm with every chic creator in colourful attire and patterned bows in their hair playfully dancing along to ‘Take A Sexy Picture Of Me’ and eagerly promoting the prospect of a CMAT summer.

This wholesome response to a song that is so vulnerable and raw, outwardly voicing the challenges of being a woman in the spotlight, provides a glimpse of hope for future generations of women following in CMAT’s footsteps. In a BBC Radio 1 interview, CMAT told Jack Saunders "I was just wearing clothes and everyone was very annoyed at me for that," in reference to a video that circulated last year of one of her performances, in which the BBC had to turn off the comments due to negative remarks on her appearance. To spin that negativity into a track that resonates with a lot of young women, while also incorporating a bit of necessary self-deprecating humour is truly audacious - later on in the interview, the County Meath singer stated that "If we're dealing with a song that's as dark as this, and as grim as this, we have to make it a bit funny."

This track opens with some frilly, vibrant vocals alongside an anecdote about waxing her legs with tape at age 9, a nostalgic, juvenile recollection: “Nine years old, tryna wax my legs with tape / There were some things only I can see”. It is the climactic and catchy bridge however, that is hooking every fan and pairing with the viral dance made by creator Sam Morris“I did the butcher, I did the baker / I did the home and the family maker / I did schoolgirl fantasies / Oh, I did leg things and hand stuff / And single woman banter”.

This song evidently showcases the confusion of being a young woman who is being perceived constantly, and the decisions that come with that, yet dedicated fans have found a way to bring light to this, which is honestly, simply, super cute.
