Following on from a history of striking singles, Vanderlye release the title track to their debut EP ‘The Reckoning’.
This is also the fifth track from the EP, adding to released tunes like ‘Romantic Anarchy’, ‘Terrible Comfort’, and ‘This Plastic Ego’. In the last year, the Glasgow alternative rock group saw an addition to their also evolving list of accolades. ‘Guilty Lovers & Heartbreak Serenades’ won Single of the Year at the Unsigned Music Awards.
‘Reckoning’ hopes to add to this positive past, this time revealing an open and more vulnerable side to Vanderlye. Penmanship from Sean McGarvey provides poignant notions of a relationship and the feelings associated with a specific person returning to your life. Each chorus begins with, “I’ve been letting my hair down", suggesting the feeling of being free. This freedom links to an element of security, “I’ll never fall apart / back in your arms”. Upon listening to these choruses, it's difficult not to notice how incredible they would sound being sang back by an adoring crowd.
McGarvey’s role extends beyond being the main songwriter, and his immediately recognisable voice join bassist Becky Clarke’s own vibrant vocals. 'Reckoning’ is elevated by this unique unity, especially with both voices being equally as distinctive. The opening moments of the track are harmonious, each verse offering a switch in main singing responsibilities.
Accompanying this interesting switch in main vocals is a steady momentum, maintained by Calum Steel on guitar and drummer Jamie Morrison. The latter half of ‘Reckoning’ sees yet another change in who vocalises the verses, with Clarke’s basslines adding a further level of depth to what is already an intriguing single. The minimalistic, yet mesmerising melody allows lyrics to shine through and resonate with listeners.
In 2024, Vanderlye had a very memorable year, with numerous advantageous gigs that promoted their ever-growing discography. On May 23rd, the group will celebrate the release of their upcoming EP at Glasgow’s Nice N Sleazy. This acts as a joint celebratory show, with Ryan Harley also releasing an EP on the same day.
‘Reckoning’ is another atmospheric and immersive anthem from Vanderlye. Even with so much to unpack, the track is very easy to listen to. It has definitely been released at the perfect time too, with a light and effervescent energy making it a suitable tune for the summer months.
