For fans of the The K’s it’s a big year: their Spring UK Tour just started, festivals like Kendal Calling and TRNSMT Festival are on the bands agenda and they are the support band for The Kooks.
On top of that the indie rock band just dropped their newest single ‘Helen, Oh I’ marking the third track to be released from their upcoming second album ‘Pretty On The Internet’, due to hit the streaming services on June 27th.
Starting with mellow piano and violin sounds as well as soft guitar notes from guitarist Ryan Breslin, the song builds up with the voice of singer Jamie Boyle echoing the pain of a past relationship with all the troubles and the regrets that come from not speaking out.
Going into the conflict between a damaged relationship and the pieces that are left behind on both sides, while yearning for the time before mistakes were made. It’s a song about the protagonist’s misery, about reticence of their own problems, about dreams and hopes, about pain and a self-reflection that’s too late. This can be seen in the lyrics of the bridge “I never told ya, told you / What I wanna do, what I’m going through / What I wanna see, who I wanna be / When I get older”. A strong bridge that is perfectly underlined by the distinct violin and the drums played by Nathan Peers before coming to a soft ending that leaves the listener longing for more.
The Indie rock band, normally moves between punk, pop and rock, break their pattern to release a song that feels like a true ballad: soft, warm like a well needed hug and gentle in its purest form while keeping elements of powerful drums mixed with mesmerizing violins. Reminding of their earlier ballads like ‘Hoping Maybe’ from their debut album ‘I Wonder If The World Knows?’, their newest single keeps it almost simple in terms of lyrical depth, which is more than fair, as they created a love song with strong vocals and the musical layering to underline the emotions without being too much.
