‘NOT US’ is the newest single from Canadian indie pop duo Wotts, released in anticipation of their upcoming EP, ‘FLANK!’.
The track takes inspiration from 80s icons like The Police, Depeche Mode, and Duran Duran, seamlessly merging retro and contemporary elements while still showcasing Wotts’ own signature sound.
Musically, ‘NOT US’ follows a straightforward yet engaging structure, blending hazy yet dynamic synths with rhythmic, distorted electric guitars all driven by a firm drum beat and deep bass. This fast-paced foundation captures the vibrant energy of the 80s. However, the almost blunt piano keys interrupt momentum, creating a brief pause that momentarily pulls the listener back into the present, adding a sense of contrast and nostalgia.
Despite its lively, upbeat sound, Wotts juxtaposes this energy with themes of loss and reflection. The emotional depth is evident not only in the performance but with the use of repetition in the lyrics such as, “Oh no, no not us” which conveys a strong sense of denial and desperation to hold onto what once was.
‘NOT US’ exemplifies Wotts’ ability to blend nostalgia with contemporary indie pop. The track’s dynamic production is balanced by moments of pause and reflection, creating an emotional push and pull that keeps listeners engaged.
