The song is entirely in French, and was written and produced with Solomonophonic (previously worked with SZA and Remi Wolf), and John Hill (FKA Twigs, Charli XCX). Remi Wolf is notably one of spill tab’s inspirations, which is prominent in this song with the funky bass lines and psychedelic tones. She has also previously worked with artists like her close friend Gus Dapperton and rapper Tommy Genesis.
Echoing through her heartache over tight drums, loose keys and a funky bass line, spill tab angelically sings of her yearning and dreaming of a better situation between herself and her lover. She suggests that she can feel her lover pulling away from her slowly; “J'attends ta voix / J'attends d'te voir comme la première fois”, “I wait for your voice / I wait to see you like the first time”.
As she compares herself to the good times, she holds the conversation (“le goût”) she is dreading to have in her teeth (“entre mes dents”), one she knows they won’t have but instead she will watch it all fall apart from the inside. Instead, she waits for anything to show that their relationship is still alive when she knows it isn’t.
‘Assis’ is written beautifully, and although hypnotic, it is honest in the feeling of not being willing to let the reality become real. While in love, spill tab is under the hypnosis she has crafted in ‘Assis’ herself. Assis, meaning sitting or sat in French, could be spill tab’s stagnancy and inability or refusal to do anything about the situation but think and think it over. The song is carried out by repetitive computer noises breaking down into just keys and an error noise, descending into overthinking.
There is still definitely more to come from spill tab and she is nowhere near done saying what she needs to. We can’t wait to see what that will be… maybe we are hypnotized already. Her upcoming tour includes multiple UK, EU, and US shows. The dates can be found on her website.
