Belfast-born Tender Claws is the moniker of the now Liverpool-based solo grunge artist. Taking inspiration from the likes of PJ Harvey, Queens of the Stone Age and Iggy Pop, Tender Claws delightfully blends bleeding grunge with rolling and insistent rock to create genre-defying soundscapes that deliver personal and heartfelt-narratives.
Following on in perfectly marine-themed style from her break-out cut 'Anglerfish', 'I'm a Leech' sees Tender Claws baring her soul as she confesses her anxieties surrounding her future in the music industry. Juxtaposing the cynical lyricism, forceful basslines dominate the track and create an exhilarating soundscape that breaks free from the doom and gloom of pondering existentialism.
Distorted vocalisations paired with eerie backing harmonies aptly support the narrative, and despite the relatively short run-time (two and half minutes), the track is teeming with impressive instrumentation and doesn't lack in packing a grunge-filled punch.
Talking on the release, Tender Claws notes; “Although it was initially done unintentionally, I think the atonal nature of ‘I’m a Leech’ and the detuned intro and outro really suit the song topic as I find it quite uncomfortable and exposing to openly admit to having negative thoughts and feelings about my musical ambitions, but writing about how I feel is somewhat therapeutic and can also lighten my mood".
Tender Claws uses rawness and frank confessions in the most admirable fashion and utilises her honesty to create a relatable narrative, that despite being steeped in darkness, still manages to allow glimmers of optimism shine through.
