‘U&ME’ is a brand-new track from British alternative outfit Alt-J. It’s an interesting single that has a tranquil feeling to it – giving off woozy vibes and reminding listeners of old friends and days gone by. It has a bustling percussion section and Joe Newman’s unmistakable vocals sound better than ever on this latest offering from the indie rockers.
The instrumentation is mostly light throughout with heavy drums and a prominent bassline. That is until a guitar riff – reminiscent of Beck – cuts through the track like a knife through butter, giving the single more sonic depth. When paired with the other components it creates a melody that both relaxes and challenges listeners, all while giving the single that signature silky Alt-J feeling.
Alt-J always work to a high standard with videos to accompany their songs and ‘U&ME’ is no exception. The music video for the lead single features the band having a day out at the skatepark, showing them working on tricks, falling about, and generally having a good time. However, that’s not all that’s on offer. The video also delves into the surreal with massive explosions, hurricanes, and floating concrete galore – but what else would you expect from an Alt-J video? Interestingly, the video is directed by keyboard player Gus Unger-Hamilton’s brother, Prosper Unger-Hamilton.
Along with this fun new track comes the good news that Alt-J have a new album on the way – ‘The Dream’. With ‘U&ME’ as its lead single, ‘The Dream’ is set to be released on the 11th of February 2022. Alt-J have also announced a tour for next year to promote the album – accompanied by Phoenix The Man.
It has been more than four years since Alt-J’s last album, and whatever your opinion of ‘U&ME’ is, its good to see one of Britain’s favourite bands back in the spotlight.
