After releasing a cover of ‘8 Days of Christmas’ by Destiny’s Child last year, Coco Jones is back in full Christmas spirit for 2024 with four-track EP ‘Coco By The Fireplace’.
Teaching the ultimate way to show self-love while sprinkling in a few Christmas idioms, ‘Santa Is Me’ is an undeniable bop. A catchy guitar loop paired with a variation of drums creates a great soundscape as the R&B star sings “If I don’t have anyone / I’m enough for me”. The note change in the final “Got all I want this Christmas” may be a tiny addition but it makes this single the perfect earworm.
Following on from that self-love smash, ‘Call On Christmas’ begins with plucky strings but at a much slower tempo. Jones admits she “Woke up with the same anxiety of all my nephews and my niece”, then revealing, “I’m looking for one thing, thing, thing / Your number on my phone”. The first two tracks both use Christmas comparisons but, in this instance, Jones is rekindling a relationship. The lyrics “Why don’t you call on Christmas? / Say you miss us”, delivered by Jones’ powerhouse vocals, make it hard not to get in-your-feels.
‘My Presence Is A Present’ sits pretty in the middle of this EP, and is appropriately inescapable as soon as it starts. An in-your-face, beat-heavy, sultry hit record, this song has the ultimate 90’s diva-esque instrumental making for three minutes of R&B perfection. If there’s one thing listeners take from this boastful number, it’s Jones’ confident persona which is sure to rub off onto everyone.
By the final song on this festive drop, the vocalist realises she may just need a little bit of company, calling upon everyone’s favourite gift-giving hero. Singing “Santa guide me to my lover / With a string of lights”, it’s in this moment that that signature Coco Jones style meets the essence of Christmas to create a blissful winter ballad.
It’s a nice touch when thought and care has been put into a project and ‘Coco By The Fireplace’ is no different. The album artwork attached with the EP sees the South Carolina vocalist channelling a 60s/70s Christmas album cover while posing in a white frilly dress and iconic fluffy heels to match. Jones’ love of the festive season is strong.
