Australian legends Spacey Jane bring their indie classics to Birmingham

One of Australia’s most loved bands Spacey Jane returned to Birmingham to bring fans their jazzy, indie sounds.

The four piece from Fremantle, Australia released their debut album ‘Sunlight’ in 2020 and have since released their second album ‘Here Comes Everybody’ in 2022

Their setlist was full of iconic Spacey songs like ‘Booster Seat’, and they also performed some of their oldest songs from their debut EP ‘No Way to Treat an Animal’ which was so special to hear live.

The band opened their final show of their UK tour with an outstanding performance of heavy guitar riffs and insane moves from Ashton Hardman-Le Cornu, as well as dreamy aussie vocals by Caleb Harper. Their setlist was curated to perfection with a mix of old, new, fast and slow and you could tell the band made this with their fans in mind as they included some of their most popular EP tracks from years ago such as ‘Feeding the Family’. You could also really sense the love between the band members, their fans, and the love they have for their profession with Caleb thanking the audience for being able to tour the world with their music.

I was blown away by Spacey Jane’s performance, stage presence and pure musical talent to create such perfectly produced tracks, and make them sound even more clear in real life. You could hear every part of Ashton and Caleb’s guitar, Peppa Lane’s steady bass and Kieran Lama’s punchy drums. The 4 blended together like I have never seen anyone do before. This was obvious throughout every song but especially during ‘Lots of Nothing’ with Caleb and Peppa dancing together and the band just being solely in sync for every track.

It was really amazing to see so many people there who are fans of their music as they have only recently started to become more popular on UK soil after conquering Australia. Drummer Kieran also shouted the fans out for knowing so many lyrics to their songs which made for a really intimate moment of the gig. Another highlight of the gig was the eye contact with Peppa. She really took her time to look at her devoted fans and smile as she sung and looked at the audience.

It was clear that this show and the whole of Spacey Jane’s UK tour was an unforgettable experience for them as it was the first time they could play their second album for UK fans. The whole gig was a remarkable moment and one that I will never forget for its intimacy and joy.
