An Aries On Gemini – Letting Up Despite Great Faults New Single Review

Zodiac signs play a large part in some people’s lives – and certain corners of the internet would have you believe that they are responsible for much of the worlds ills. Each sign has various traits that apparently characterise those who are of that sign.

As an Aries; I am passionate and motivated – something that my university may disagree with.

Apparently I should be irritated by unnecessary details and nuance, something my reviews thus far no doubt back up. I am straightforward and direct. Supposedly. Gemini’s on the other hand – while both indecisive and impulsive – are also easy going, adaptable and the life and soul of a party.

They bring the dance to the floor and bring anyone up in the cosmos. I am attracted to this easy, free spirit they supposedly posses, I guess opposites really do attract. I’m not talking of a person as such, the idea more. The vibe of a Gemini really sends me into dream.

If I haven’t been straightforward enough, I like ‘Gemini’, the new single by Letting Up Despite Great Faults.

The four piece continue their winning streak of dream gaze anthems with this latest release. Retro in it’s sound; it’s baggy like the Stone Roses, trippy in same way Lorde can be but with enough pop sensibility to make Pale Waves blush. The American outfit – despite being around and releasing material for over a decade – continue to be an underground tremor as oppose to a mainstream powerhouse amongst the electro-pop world. They have a loyal following and a collection of evocative, dreamy bangers such as ‘Bulletproof Girl’ and ‘Wrapped’, but have yet to truly break into the running for a student’s end of year video carousel. ‘Gemini’ may be their best case yet however.

Evocative and uplifting both musically and lyrically. Layered, textured synths drive the song with a riff ready to pierce the heart in any coming of age scene at a house party. The lyrics are delivered dryly; like an awkward love from a Wes Anderson movie. The engagement of Zero and Agatha from his magnus opus The Grand Budapest Hotel springs to mind. “I love that you’re always the first to dance” could’ve been spoken by a Wilson brother. Awkward, dry and yet strangely uplifting, it’s a method that has captured the imagination of cinephiles globally, and this song is ripe to conquer soundtracks.

Letting Up Despite Great Faults are yet to put a foot wrong in any daydream. The only fault one can see is possibly their name, for they are far from giving up the ghost. ‘Gemini’ is yet another example of their ability to craft an infectious melody and evoke fantasies one usually is privy too when one is asleep. This is true dreamgaze. The mind’s eye is opened and in steps a Gemini. I know how this feels, for not all nuance is yet lost on me.
