After a two-year hiatus, Coco & Clair Clair are back with their latest single ‘Coldplay’. Popular for their twinkling sound, the Atlanta-based Hip-Hop duo have released several internet smash hits in the late 2010s’, a feat which has continued into the rise of early TikTok sounds. 

With the pop-ish and electronic sound of some of their most well-known songs, such as ‘Pretty’, ‘Popstar’ and ‘Crushcrushcrush’, the duo's latest release marks an era of maturity. They have ditched the raspy, high-pitched vocals for a confident and feminine hushed approach. Unlike their past releases, ‘Coldplay’ has a darker resonance that distinguishes itself within Coco & Clair Clair's repertoire. 

Still maintaining their electronic sound, the use of heavy beats and the layering of vocal tracks and ad-libs creates an emptier tone reminiscent of reckless nights out. The group's usual playfulness within the lyrics takes the song in and out of seriousness. In many ways, the song is about a drunken, emotional night ending in men, complicated relationships, and the pensive comedown. For example,  Claire Toothill, or Clair Clair, paints a classic picture as she sings: “Blackout in your front yard / Playing Coldplay, looking at the stars / Call a black car to another bar / Life is so good when we’re going hard”.

Still, listeners are quickly reminded of the duo's classic approach to cheekiness and teasing lyrics, making reference to one of Coldplay's most popular songs, ‘Yellow’. Here, Taylor Nave, the Coco of the pair, sings “Your man’s pee probably ain’t very clear / Some would say, “It was all yellow””- a fun, tongue-in-cheek way of citing its title's inspiration.

Ultimately, this is one of the more definitive Hip-Hop based songs from the pair, ditching the nostalgic indie sound in favour of echoing beats. Growing from their early releases, this release and the artistry of the duo have clearly grown in tandem with their audience.
